Joseph B. Vestal Endowed Scholarship

The EWA-Joseph B. Vestal Endowed Scholarship has been established at Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, Virginia, to award financial aid to full time ODU students enrolled in Electrical Engineering Technology or Information Systems Management studies who intend to pursue a professional career in wireless applications or telecommunications.

The EWA Board of Directors directed that this fund be established at Old Dominion University because that is the alma mater of Joseph B. Vestal, named a Distinguished Alumni of ODU (class of 1960), “…recognizing Mr. Vestal’s excellence, innovation and entrepreneurial contributions to the wireless industry.”

ODU manages the endowment fund under the auspices of the ODU Educational Foundation, a 501(c)3 entity. The fund, which is fully endowed, accepts directed donations through the ODU Development Office. For further information, please contact either Mark Crosby or Andrea Cumpston. You may donate to the fund online via the instructions on the right.

Joe Vestal (1933-2020) was a former member of the EWA Board of Directors who was known for being a distinguished executive and leader in the wireless industry. Prior to founding FleetTalk Management Services, Mr. Vestal had a long career in management with Motorola in their land mobile radio products division and was instrumental in guiding EWA and American Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA) strategic initiatives as an elected officer and member of the Board of Directors of these industry trade associations.

“Joe Vestal has been a mentor, inspiration and a critical advisor to many people aspiring to leadership in the wireless communications industry,” commented Mark E. Crosby, President and CEO of EWA. “It’s only appropriate that this endowment opportunity be used to assist dedicated scholars who seek to excel in an industry that has benefited so much from Joe’s contributions.”
